Excessive grinding and clenching of teeth are a big problem for a lot of people. Over half of my patient population, including myself, are affected by night time clenching and grinding. Most of the time, an occlusal appliance (night guard) helps to reduce this tendency and protect teeth and muscles from the damaging effect of grinding. However, not everyone is able to tolerate a night guard. And many people continue to clench during the day resulting in headaches, damaged teeth, muscle fatigue, and pain.
Botox masseter therapy can help to reduce the over-activity of the masseter muscle - the major closer muscle in your jaw. As an example, squeeze your teeth together and feel with your finger on the outside of your jaw - this is your masseter. The other major closer muscle is the temporalis which is above your ear.
Botox reduces the muscle function of both the masseter and temporalis muscles. During an exam, we can determine the right amount of botox necessary to reduce muscle function by about 40%. Typically, 60-80 total units of botox is required to effectively reduce muscle hyperactivity on both sides. As a result of reducing the activity and size of the masseter, most patients have the added benefit of slimming the jaw and creating a more balanced face shape. Treatment typically costs $600 unless more quantity is needed. Treatment duration usually lasts 3-6 months. Follow-up applications are typically necessary.
Most patients report minimal discomfort with the injection due to the small size of the needle and large size of the muscles. Many patients have said that this is some of the best money they've spent. Botox masseter therapy is effective, reversible, and safe.
