Computers have made a tremendous impact on our lives within the last thirty years and have made our lives easier and more efficient in many ways. Dentistry has been affected by this digital revolution as well. Now it's possible to take a digital image of a tooth and from that image make a beautiful porcelain restoration the same day.
Traditionally, when a person needed a crown or partial crown, he or she was required to wear a temporary restoration while the lab fabricated a permanent restoration. With the advent of CAD/CAM technology, we now have the ability to provide a restoration in a single visit.
CAD/CAM stands for "computer-aided design/ computer-aided mill." Instead of a traditional putty impression, a digital impression is taken using a digital scanner. A computer is used to digitally generate a porcelain restoration, and the digital restoration is custom milled from a block of porcelain in the office. This eliminates the need for a temporary restoration or a second appointment.
CAD/CAM technology has been clinically proven in dentistry for over 20 years, beginning with CEREC by Sirona Dental. CEREC continues to be the leader in dental CAD/CAM technology. CEREC's advantages include increased accuracy, increased comfort and convenience for patients, and better dentistry.
Technology is providing exciting advances in dentistry that provide better care and improve the overall experience. We are excited to offer CEREC Same Day Crowns in our practice. Please call us if you have any questions about your specific dental needs.
